Typical Weather of the Northern Areas of Pakistan
The climate and the weather in northern Pakistan are
controlled by altitude differences. The high mountains over 16,000 feet remain
covered with snow throughout the year, while the narrow valleys have an extreme
climate both in summer and in winter.
The area discussed generally has cold winters and mild
summers. The following is a brief description of the temperature and
precipitation of the area.
Temperature:
The high mountains record temperatures below freezing all
year round. While the temperatures of the deep valleys fluctuate extremely in
summer and winter. The daily temperature range is also very high. For example,
at an altitude of about 4,500 feet and surrounded by high mountains, Gilgit
detects temperatures around midday in July, often above 100 F, while the night
low can drop to as high as 60 F due to increased catabatic impact. This shows a
very high daily range of 40 F! However, the same station recorded January
temperatures of up to 20 ° C during the winter.
Skardu has a slightly milder summer at an altitude of about
7500 feet. But even here, temperatures of over 95 ° C in the summer are not
uncommon. It is interesting to note that it is the same place that holds the
record for the coldest city in Pakistan. On January 24, 1994, Skardu registered
a temperature of -16 F! This clearly shows that deep valleys, which are
surrounded by high mountains such as Gilgit and Skardu, have extreme
temperatures in summer and winter.
Precipitation:
Rainfall in high mountains is in snow all year round. In the
deep, deep valleys rain falls in summer and snow in winter.
The most important rain system in this area is the western
fault that occurs in this region every year between December and April,
providing moderate rainfall.
The summers are almost painless. No summer month at Gilgit
recorded more than 0.5 inches of rainfall. The numbers for Skardu are similar.
There is a general lack of rainfall. No wonder that sand dunes can be seen in
places like Gilgit, a few miles from the city.
The relative humidity is low all year round and there is a
very cold and dry wind blowing from the northeast, especially in Skardu in
winter.
In short, the climate of the northern areas of Pakistan has
extreme temperatures and precipitation is low throughout the year.
